Warhammer Online: Age of Reckoning News - Updated Bright Wizard and Sorceress Balance Changes

Posted by Michael Bitton on May 14, 2010  | 41 comments in our forums

Patch 1.3.6 was set to bring a number of significant balance changes to WAR, however, several of these simply could not wait and have been pushed forward to go live with patch 1.3.5. The changes being pushed up address the issue of PBAOE "Bomb" groups, as the developers anticipated that this tactic would really throw off the new City Siege experience.

For the unfamiliar, PBAOE Bomb groups basically consist of several players supporting a single Bright Wizard or Sorceress as they run into groups of enemies and deal serious amounts of PBAOE damage. Normally, the Bright Wizard and Sorceress would suffer too much damage trying to do this due to their class mechanic, but with enough healing support they can trivialize the effects on the mechanic and wipe out entire groups of players.

Read below for the upcoming changes to Scorched Earth and Surging Pain:

  • Bright Wizard:  Scorched Earth now costs 20 Combustion instead of Action Points.  Additionally, this ability no longer builds Combustion when used.
  • Sorcerer:  Surging Pain now costs 20 Dark Magic instead of Action Points.  Additionally, this ability no longer builds Dark Magic when used.

In short, you won't be able to "charge your laser" as I call it by using Scorched Earth or Surging Pain anymore, and you'll only have up to five casts before you run out of mojo anyways. These are some pretty significant, but I bet many will agree, needed changes.

View the announcement here.

This has been happening forever in this game, but usually its just 10 bright wizards, its not like order play any other classes. Just a bunch of bright wizard AOE spam ftw, I have seen groups of 15+ with a couple warrior priests. Plus isnt this literally the 5 millionth patch adressing these "aoe issues?"

Awesome! now that they balanced the bright wizard, finally they can release the other 2 capital cities that they promised at launch! Maybe they will even  fix the engine so we can play 200 v 200 like they promised at launch, at this rate this game will be awesome by 2017!

It's an interesting change.

Frankly, the main issue has always been an organized group vs PUGs. People who don't organize want organization nerfed to uselessness. Same deal with premades in instanced PvP.

ADDED:

What should have been done from the start is have combustion (and the Sorc analog) blowback (if it activates) as a chance to DIE - not just take some damage.

ALSO ADDED:

"the developers anticipated that this tactic would really throw off the new City Siege experience."

What? The devs anticipated an issue? New hires?

This is a nice balance the Bombhammer age of bright wizards.

I completely agree.

Their notion of balancing realm vs realm was ridiculous. The only way it could have worked was to limit PvP to 12v12 - and limit it to one of each and every class. Even that would only have worked once the four missing classes were added.

Yeah... this has been going on since before the game launched. There was a well-known BW on my server named "Dissb", and he and his support group would dominate scenarios to the point that I would just stop playing. Eventually I just unsubbed because there was really no point in playing if that guy was online. UNBELIEVEABLE that Mythinc just now decided to fix this. Worst imbalance I have ever seen in an MMO.

This had nothing to do with orginization or anything. This was grab a bunch of BWs, maybe A healer or two. Win.

Did sorc do a lot of damage? Yes. But the few extra mechancis that Sorc got made them better. Healing debuff? Debuff to the DAMAGE type they do?

Anyways, way to little, way to late. The game coulda been so much fun.

I used to play WAR and unsubbed for the very fact that BWs could level a group of anything in a matter of seconds. Add to that all the other classes on order that used to be able to stun, knockdown, knockup, rinse and repeat til your dead, and the game became seriously not fun. No point in coming back at this point. Nearly 2 years and still have 4 missing capital cities, generic races (skaven would have been better), completely unbalanced classes, boring gameplay, and broken city raids. The game should be left to fade away.

As for DAoC, I will always treasure my memories of that game pre-SI edition. Now its just a mish mash of who has the best connections to get the best artifacts for their battleground twinks. What was a story driven MMO, rich in myths and legends, has devolved into a useless pvp fest in battlegrounds and little else.

Unfortunately to keep subs companies have to cater to these masses of stupid cry-babies.

I'm not elite. I am average and I can see this. Your ineptitude and lack of problem solving process ruins good playing experiences, ruins fun for gamers who seek challenges, and in the end has ruined whole games.

People whined about magnet, especially thru keep doors, and while I never played an engineer or equiv magus, I never saw a problem with it. I learned how to not let players do this to me. But the tactic was nerfed completely.

People whined about keep lord room seige because they didn't have coordination to get up into and thru the room and fight back in, so they added a second ramp to make seiges so god-awfully retardedly easy my cousin with down syndrome can damn near duo them.

I think some of you screw everything up you touch to have an easy mode button. I really don't like it.

I understand what you're trying to say, and usually, you would be right. However, the BW problem was one that, if properly executed by the BW and his team, could not be countered. You could not kill the BW, and if you tried to kill his support team, you died to the PBAOE. Done correctly, it was unstoppable. Perhaps you didn't ever see it executed this effectively, but I did, and it was just plain broken game mechanics.

Ok. To isolate use knockback, ae knockback, use heal-reduction debuffs, or hell, just silence the bw if there's one, stun a healer, murder another healer quickly,  in pvp wear some resist gear..
Alot of your problem in t4 sc's is going to be underleveled or undergeared teammates. I hated douches who jumped in t4 sc at 28 just to melt all over the place with two hits. They're stupid and inconsiderate, never made it into a guild with me, and especially never in a pre-made.

I played this game alot. I did see everything people could throw at you. I saw stuff you won't see anymore like I mentioned previously. Granted sometimes learning came in revelations, actual mistakes like mis-targets during focus firing paying off because they drew healer attention, crazy stuff you'd never expect like that "together opponent pre-made" chasing after a tank running a wide lateral. Often playing a zealot with a proverbial "kick me" sign on my back, my fav move was to purposely run THRU the opponent line, with my team healing only me, as I could only imagine them spamming "kill the healers!". Counter intuitive. Resulted in our dps running up and destroying their dps from behind wayyy faster than they could rez.

The only, ONLY, reason some tactic is "unstoppable" is because you LET it be.

Again, to reiterate, playing against bw's back when they were way more imbalanced than they are now (for god sakes, the first 2 months several spells like meltdown didn't even build combustion! fire cage was spammable! now 'that's' broken) I genuinely feel, no, I know these "changes" are made to keep subscribers who can't stop themselves from being cheese-dicked.

Many people think when things change after they complain, they were right. Many times things are changed to make them shut up. Open your eyes and think for 5 seconds. BW is the squishiest class I've ever seen in any pvp, anywhere, and now they're being nerfed more because players don't know what their own debuffs do, or think they should be competitive with sub-standard gear or specs.

Quite a lot of incorrect information here. I'm a RR80 bomb specced BW btw (Pandemic of Karak Eight Peaks then Karak Norn servers)

Firstly both Bright Wizards and Sorcerers are exactly the same in their bomb (pbaoe) damage. They have been for sometime, in fact they use the same damage spells, tactics, equipments etc.

This patch wont really affect a Sorc bombing at all - they have ways around the combustion change. It will slightly affect the BW bomb damage but again its very easy to get around it.

So no; this wont see an end to the BW / Sorc bombing.

It does stop the Sorc using an exploit of an aoe dot potion that ticks for huge damage - that is a good thing.

On the plus side, we have gotten information that Close Quarters (25% increase in BW/Sorc damage at close range) is being looked at; as is the items from LOTD that bypass a tanks defence abilities.

Also Mythic's pvp team went up against a Karak Norn team (order) on the Test Server and Mythic got bombed flat :) I dont think they were happy! In any case I have it on good authority that there are some more anti-bombing from BW/Sorc changes coming in addition to the above.

Warhammer is a pretty good pvp game right now, except for the bombing its very good. What it isnt is for those without a backbone - whatever your class or how well you think you play it, your going to die a lot.

Me, I am working my way to being killed in pvp 100,000 times and I might well be the first player to reach it as I was for 10,000 times.
