And also because there is no monthly free. It's now a GW payment system.

And the game is underrated. Very nice shooter in fact.

Depends on what you're referring to as "weak". You have to remember you can spec an assault into at least 3 roles , each with major drawbacks. Alot of players like to spec their assaults AOE-DPS , which means lower HP and lower protection...in fact a AOE specced assault is most likely as "weak" as a recon in terms of HP/Defense . Chances are an Assault standing on a roof with a rocket launcher will always lose against a recon on that same roof. That said, an assault "left alone" on a roof like that will top the damage charts easily...

Now the TANK spec, which is what every team and medic usually hope and pray for is most often the least fun to play. You got low DPS , but you're a juggernaut and can take ALOT of hits standing on the point...but you struggle to kill anything. Problem with this spec is it's extremely reliant on what your team is doing....being Tank specced and then SOLO'ing is total fail. So if you enter a merc match, and there's no medics, or the medics aren't healing you, or your team ain't killing the turrets, then you can be TANK Specced all you like you will not achieve -anything- . I'd say that's why you find alot of assaults not speccing TANK because they don't trust their team to do their jobs [so they try to do the turret/beacon/killing themselves with much poorer results].

It's exactly like WoW i'd say, you can spec your warrior into a tank but if you don't have a team behind you, it's pointless and frustrating to play [so you end up speccing arms/dps]...same thing happens with Assaults.

That said, add a focussed team with a TANK specced assault and that team steamrolls over everything and it feels amazing , your damage will also spike just because you were alive to shoot at things the entire time.

Either way, i think what makes Assaults "look" weak is the fact that players are speccing them into roles that are not truly suited for them. So an assault CAN run around melee'ing the crap out of everyone [like a recon] and it CAN stand on a roof and AOE things from a distance [like a turret] , but it's most definitely weaker at those roles than a Recon or a Robo ...which is why the term "fagmalancer" exists [an assault with a magmalance who is specced full AOE and never comes close to the point] .

I've played all 4 classes and my assault can die just as fast as any of the other classes if i spec him DPS, but Assault is the only class if i DO spec full tank that can stand in front of a turret and survive.

Just to say that the guy above is perfectly right.

1) play a match as a tank spec

2) receive no heal, no support

3) die on the point after a long struggle

4) repeat 1) to 3) until you're bored then jump to 5)

5) spec as a AoE magma lancer and do kills.

The medic can also suffer from this since at point 5) there is no more tank to heal, which is the bread and butter of a winning team. I've been in some match where we, medics, were taking points by cross-healing each other, while the rest of the team was shooting at the point from a safe distance.

If you are addicted to teamplay, get ready for a big frustration in the PvP matches. Voice com is reduced to a minimum and a majority of players are playing for their stats, not for the team. Personally I consider joining AvA and stop playing PvP for a while.

Most everyone on test likes the changes and if they can iron out the kinks in 2 weeks then its best to release it. More content is always good.

The open zone is expected by many people, It's the first question asked by new players on the test server "can we go outside ?". 1.3 means open zone. Removin the open zone from the 1.3 patch would be a big dissapointment for many players. The current content of the patch is not enough I'm affraid. HR shouldn't waste this opportunity.

I wont lie to you like the others.

1) This is not a FPS and should not be compared. Its a TPS

2) Skill means a lot, but not everything. Your spec means a ton and dont listen to people that say it doesnt. If they dont realize this yet, they dont know the game very well. You gain levels, which gives you spec points (called skill points). Think of WoW and how you have your specialization trees. Its the same for this game. You get points to place into those trees. It means a lot and at level 30 you will have everything the same as a level 50. It maxes out right now at level 30. So level to 30 and you will be on even ground. This is truth. There isnt a level 1-20 that can kill me unless they have someone else helping them. 1 vs 1 it is impossible against a good player. Luckily, this is still a team based game though, so you wont recognize the ass stomping you couldve gotten when people are helping you.

3) Most FPS players are highly dissatisfied with this game

1) FPS or TPS I don't see the difference. TPS lets you play melee, that's all. (btw I like it).

2) The fact that a L1-20 cannot kill you isn't because of the lack of skill point, but the experience in the game. Mastering the jetpack is a must. A plasma assault able to do a 180 airborne to shoot the recon after him can invert the odds and kill him. Nothing to do with level (except for unlocking the plasma launcher). Your level is only a way to give you more different ways to win the game, but the victory is possible at any level.

3) Don't pretend you're speaking for the most part of the FPS player base. I'm a FPS player. The game is great. It reminds me of the good time in tribes 2 and planetside. And tricking the enemy in a duel with the "melee/range/special" triangle is always a perfect moment. You become good at it with time and by being able to predict the next move of your oponent. That's what I call FPS stuff. A good old killing system, achieved by skill and by wanting the victory more than your opponent.

I don't get why people can't choose a clear title for their threads.

I've just played AvA tonight until our map close and it's really fun. Now you feel the pressure when you play a match. Should you attack now ? Do you have a task force to protect your other hex during the attack, just in case ?

You can feel the tribes effect, when you're about to finish an opponent and he tries to run away, taking cover around boxes or whatever. You fly to him, trying to get that little more angle needed to finish him off. If you fly better than he runs, you toast him. Or you can get out of situations really hopeless. jetpack skills are rewarded. Not too much (overkill) but just enough.

I've played a ...lets say ... "commando medic". I was bored at my team being too static and I've flanked an enemy group installing stuff around a corner. It's fun, it's just fun. You run into a pack, shoot around then take cover, aim at a deployable and destroy it. Shoot carefuly an opponent who tries to rush you, melee him, outdamage him by playing with reverse shield, melee, gun..(take his health pack from his corpse, just like in tribes). then fly to another point to get another angle.

It felt like harrassing a defense in tribe's katabatic, when you do the danse in the enemy underground base, from inventory station to anther (for those who knows katabatic).

I don't know if the impression will last, maybe I'll be bored in a month, who knows ? But for now, I'm quite happy with my investment, even if I don't subscribe, the game is worth it. Too bad they don't release a demo. Honestly It's worth trying if you're an FPS fan (not a MMO fan, but now you should see the big picture).

I was happy to see so many skills int the tree, but now that I've  built 8 characters I noticed that the 1st skills I choose are the same for all the characters.

jetpack boost (whatever it's called)

energy boost

damage reduction (to get 3 skill in comon tree)

energy restoration

Why would you ignore a skill that makes you fly twice as longer ? Or shoot 40% more and fly 40% farther ? Compare it to the +3% damage in melée and the melee block. Is there really a choice here ?

I bet that 90% of the players have chosen the same path in skill tree. This can be a problem, as we might see the same templates for every class. The common skills are OP, the secondary skills needs a buff.

Wait...

You say it's like Tribes...

Then you say "but don't want to play a bunny-hopping twitch-fest either"...

I'm confused now...

At a base, that's all Tribes was. Pretty much everything great and awesome about Tribes came from Renegades and the gargantuan stack of modifications, customization, and enjoyment they stacked on top of the at the time innovative combat style of flight and hill hopping.

Between it and Planetside, I'd still opt for Planetside. Nothing has beaten that game on the battlefield and strategy front yet for me.

I'm not sure if you played the original tribes or not, but tribes definitely wasn't all about the bullshit bunny hopping and head-shotting. It was about tactical aerial combat, moving in to attack with your squad, and fights that weren't over in the blink of an eye - with emphasis on defensive play and siege-assault-style attacks.

On that note, if you've played Planetside, I would say that the combat is very similar to planetside's combat, only with the addition of flight, melee, and higher survability. In short, like if Planetside and Tribes were to have a baby.

Also, I agree with other posters that it'd be nice to have more "MMO content" for the game - however, I'll reaffirm that I don't feel like the game is an unfinished product. It's fun right out of the box, it stays fun, and aside from that, you can run PVP matches and PVE matches forever without ever paying the monthly fee - the only thing that the monthly fee unlocks, as far as I know, is the whole Alliance vs Alliance bit.

True story. Can't really bunny hop in a bunker. That game was great. Only if GA had big maps like that and offered more boost in the jet pack like tribes.

Jetpacks have punch. The difference is the lack of skying and airdisks.

We all get you hate GA. So you don't like it. Who cares. No game is for everyone. You entire post history is bagging GA. Someone paying you to bag them?

People should know that if they get this game, they will not get the standard 1 month free that has gone with EVERY MMO SINCE AC/EQ/UO.

Period.

And they don't get an AUTOATTACK KEY either, can you believe this ? Where is this #?&! autoattack key ? And they call it an MMO ?

i will keep loling. PS is garbage for an MMO and it always was. isnt this why it's dead? not enough people were playing it, and now GA players have to deal with an entire exodus of PS fanboys trying to spread PS's failed philosophy.

if youre gonna compare it to anything, compare it to Tribes, which it's based on. dont compare it to a tactical shooter.

I don't compare it to anything. I just have fun playing it. What's wrong with that ? What makes you LOL at the (relative) failure of PS ?

We have fun playing it, we discuss it inline....I mean, what is wrong with it. What is your problem ? Do you feel the NEED to rant more and more ?

i lol'd so hard. dead game ftw...right.

Keep loling, the game is good as it is. Don't call it an MMO who cares ? As long as we have fun playing it, it's the only thing that matter.

It show that the one who posted the top 5 really had no idea of what pvp is :P

I know right? I mean how dare he share his opinion on what his top pvp games and what he enjoyed playing the most. In fact there should be no articles at all on this website or any other gaming site because they are all opinions.

Look chief, not everybody has the same preferences as you do. It's amazing people get so bent out of shape when someone doesn't share their opinion.

Dan Quayle has opinions too. It's fine, as long as all of his articles are clearly signed with "Dan Quayle", so everyone knows the value to give to the article and to his list of the 5 best laws in the USA "by Dan Quayle".

Maybe it's time to look for other valuable mmo sites. Anyone has a link to share ?

One game I would have on my own list for PVP is SFC2:OP  If you have played it on the dynaverse you will know what I mean by PVP.  If you havent then explaining it would be cumbersome. But long and short

- 3v3 duels possible in instanced area

- up to 16 factions can vie for control of the galaxy

- pvp and pve events change status of sectors of space

- have fought duels that last hours

- I have yet to see another pvp game that has the options in combat and teamwork that SFC has

WoW is on this list, but Darkfall isn't?   I don't think any serious MMO PvP player is going to take this seriously.  WoW is like the laughing stock of the PvP community.  Hell Warhammer is practically on life support and has more crowd control that any other game.   I'd rather see Lineage 2 or maybe even Aion over WAR.

I genuinely believe that WOW was included for shock value. Things have been relatively quiet on this site over the last couple of days. At least that's what I've noticed. This thread will surely increase the traffic around here.

If Darkfall can't be included in a "top five pvp mmo" contest on a site dedicated to mmos, then how seriously do you think this site will be taken? Maybe they have a beef with AV?

No skin off my ass though, in the end it's the credibility of the website that is damaged.

It's true that if someone new to the mmorpgs was looking for a PvP game and looked at this list, he would be misleaded. Not mentionning planetside (since he also talks about oldies) wwiionline, darkfall or guildwars in this kind of frontpage list is really strange.

It's like listing the best electronic music groups and forgetting to mention "Justice" or "Daft Punk" and publishing the list on the rolling stones magazine website (or whatever). "But I've never listenened to those groups before" is not an excuse.

I can't agree more with the OP. I've been using computers for more than 20 years and MMO are probably the domain that makes me think very often: "OMG, if I had the programming abilities, I would change this crap and make it THIS way". Of course I don't have the programming skills to modify an MMO.

What the OP is asking for is probably very heavy in programming, it would re

As many knew, Tabula Rasa was a pretty original game. It was a shooter combined with an MMO, and even if it was a little on the odd side, the game was actually pretty fun. It could really remind you of an MMO version of Mass Effect, to some degree, as they're both futuristic sci-fi shooters with RPG style systems.

But this post isn't just about Tabula Rasa. It's about Dungeon Runners, a quirky little Diablo-style game with pretty good graphics, some fairly standard gameplay, with the heart of the game in it's comedic delivery. Both games were released by NCSoft.

I really don't trust NCSoft nowadays. There was the Guild Wars account debacle where people were losing their accounts and getting all their gear cleaned out. Rather than fix Tabula Rasa or try something new, they pulled the plug, and apparently they did the same with Dungeon Runners. Tabula Rasa was one of my favorites, and I didn't really play much of Dungeon Runners, but I feel what has been done here has set a rather scary precedent...

NCSoft, this big corporate gorilla with titles like Aion and City of Heroes under it's belt... are willing to crush any MMO they don't deem profitable, no matter how people enjoy it. Yet, to this day, Diablo 2 still has servers up, as well as Warcraft 3, no matter how much flak Blizzard gets, they still keep these servers up.

I'm personally a little spooked to buy anything from NCSoft now, as it seems even if you enjkoy the game, unless it's bathing them in glittering gold, and no matter if they're raking in tons of money from other really big titles... they'll still shut you down and cast you off.

I realize we all have to say goodbye sometime, and Dungeon Runners certainly had a better run than most... but I do not approve of NCSoft's methods in the slightest, and personally, I hope Blizzard, Valve, and other companies that have displayed true customer appreciation will crush folks like NCSoft and NDoors (see the Atlantica Online charity debacle for details), who personally make me sick to be a gamer.

I realize these are businesses, but when you're well off enough with things like Aion, and the Dungeon Runners team is only made up of a handful of people left... would it REALLY kill anyone to keep them running anyway? I can't help but feel if your game is hosted by NCSoft, they'll pull the plug the second they don't see a profit. Thus, I name NCSoft the touch of death.

-Agree 100% , i wont be buying anything from NC....EVER!

Are you gonna spoil more Naruto episodes ?

This game has nothing massive. It's kind of the tombs in guildwars, you play match after match and voilà. Is it enough to add an auctin house to claim a subscription ? I'm not sure.

The real MMOFPS that people is waiting for would be a planetside on steroids. With a revamped network code. 100 vs 100 with no lag and bullets and shells everywhere. This is massive, this is persistent.

8 vs 8... MMO ? no.
