From todays state of the game, it looks like Roper is moving on to Cryptic's yet un-announced 3rd project, and leaving Champions Online: "Shannon Posniewski, or Poz on the forums, is taking over as Executive Producer on Champions Online as I move to other design responsibilities within Cryptic Studios. Shannon has been with Cryptic since back in the “City of” days, is Director of Game Programming, and has been serving as our lead programmer since before launch." As a continuing fan of CO, I am definitely pleased with this change up. Bill had some positive influence on the game pre-launch, but when the game fell short of its target of 100,000 subscriptions, it seemed to me that Roper withdrew from the community and became out-of-touch. From the launch day patch, to the initial plan to charge for Vibora Bay, it always felt like Bill was not listening to the players. This change in leadership is just one more positive step, after really a whole month of positive steps (CO almost fell apart completely leading up to the STO launch, those were some fun times on the forums). The communication has turned around, and the post-launch development is finally starting to happen (it sounds like a joke, but they really abandoned CO for a while). It won't be that easy to regain the lost players, however, and the population is pretty low right now. I could go on about how the game is changing. I understand the reasons most people abandoned / avoided CO, and I am not going to lie and say those issues have all been fixed. What is true, is that this news coupled with the good month CO has been having, has me hopeful for the first time in ages that CO could turn around and gain subs. They are definitely supporting the game more strongly right now then any time since launch ( I don't mean that pi in the sky State of the Game, I mean the way they are working with us to get feedback and bug fixes into the upcoming expansion). Cryptic is trying a Customer Development approach to MMO creation. |

Bill has always been out of touch IMO.
Too bad they didn't send him packing outright.
The further away he is from this genre the better off it will be. Einherjar of Landroval |

What is scary is Cryptic is going to let him near another MMO. That is scary! Please don't let it be a Neverwinter Nights MMO or Forgotten Realms.. |

Hehe, off to screw up their next project, is he? Although given their recent track record, it doesn't seem like they really need his help doing it. That man should be scrubbing sewers with a toothbrush, not designing video games. Or better yet, fornicating himself with a pineapple. Your words are as empty as your future. I am the vanguard of your destruction. |

To thee who created the topic, please change the name of it. You had my hopes up in thinking Cryptic actually did something right for a change and fired this hack.
Instead I found out they are letting him near another game, his 3rd for the company...
This topic should instead be named "Bill Roper Leaves CO raped and out cold, to move onto his next MMO victim" |

For some reason I thought he had already left CO. Ugh, if it wasn't for STO ruining my view of Cryptic, I'd play CO in a heartbeat. In truth, I loved the trial and everything about it. Ah well.
~Miles "Tails" Prower out! Catch me if you can!

Bill Roper has always been able to make very good games but is no way shape or form is he a public relations guy or someone who should be involved with player feedback. Not all of us were born to be everything but I hope that whatever the next project he works on that he makes a great game. |

I hope CO improves further with new leadership, I don't know much about what has happened to CO recently; but when I played it for the first few months at launch I thought it was a lot of fun, but it just didn't stick with me (Horrible Balancing, Constant lag and d/c, lack of content and so forth).
However, I've always been a fan of super hero games (CoX) so I'm hoping CO will make a good come back :) |

Well this might give CO a chance to grow and prosper, or, its just in maintenance mode and was handed off to someone to nurse till it dies. As others have said, its a shame they are going to let him near another game, and more likely than not it will be a POS as well.

Keep us posted on his next connection so I can steer way clear of that one too. Thanks! |

Bill Roper is a perfect representation of the whole Cryptic company. REALITY CHECK |

First off, I am thrilled to hear that Roper is gone. Roper had no feel for the pulse of the cummunity, and seemed consistently to make the wrong design choices. But where does it say he is working on Cryptic's next MMO? I don't see that. It simply says he is getting reassigned. The wording makes it unclear if he got assigned to help design their next MMO (good news for Roper) or if they simply had to wait for his contract to time out and so have him sorting jelly beans somewhere in the company (bad news for Roper.) Anyone know the actual situation? |

Finally someone said enough is enough and removed him from his position, and like he stated on massively i hope he takes his dollar bill pants with him. http://i39.tinypic.com/ddc7pk.jpg |

This is good news for CO. Since Hellgate London I knew that I would be careful buying a game where Bill Roper had his hands on it. I didn't played CO because of the whole RMT stuff that came up a short time after Bill Roper came to Cryptic. The way of developing a game and its revenue really looked like Ropers handwriting in CO. Not very concentrated in developing a great gaming experience but charging for every little bit of stuff which was taken out of the game calling it extra content, like special multiplayer features for Hellgate London that you had to subscribe for I hope CO developers have the chance to use their concentration now on new game ideas so that Champions Online will become what it was supposed to be, a super hero mmo and not just a one month cash cow. I will keep an eye on CO again. [X] drill here for new monitor |

lets hope they get it off of them sooner rather than later, Cryptic have already made a mess of one game i was looking forward to (STO) i'd hate for to have them do that again to yet another. |

Ever since "Heads will roll" Age of Conan .... heads keep rolling in MMO developpers land. Gaute Godager (Aoc), Marc Jacobs (War) and Bill Roper (Hellgate London and CO) ... Anyone interested in hiring them for a new game ? :) Want a real mmorpg? Play WOW with experience turned off mode and be Pve_Pvp King at any level without a rat race. |

Originally posted by Miles-Prower This, I played the CO beta and absolutely loved it, but the fatal patch just before launch (that screwed over most of the lifetimers) left me pretty unconfident in Crptic as a company. STO just reinforced my thoughts on them. Now that Roper is out of the picture though I'll consider taking a look at CO again. I honestly hadn't grown that attached to a character in an MMO in a long time. |

It seems like a lot of people aren't actually reading the OP. Roper isn't being fired, or punished in any way, he's being moved to a different project. That's not a demotion, it's a lateral move. If they wanted to fire him, they would fire him. He isn't a Supreme Court justice. Cryptic is determined to make every mistake they can think of. Letting Roper work on their next project is just one of them. |
